Saturday N0v. 28th was a night to remember, unless you were there (drinkin’ Jameson) so you don’t remember! Yeah! Crankshaft pounded out one of his best sets I have seen to date. He is more than ready for his 12 nights 12 small dive bars tour across Minnesota. Boom Boom Belam had a dirty grooved set that absorbed the full attention of the tiny bar. Playing his newly found gem, a Silvertone hollow body! This all came after a victorious set by our fearless folk leader Spider John Koerner wet down the inhabitants of the bar with his crooning. Palmer’s was just how it was supposed to be: dark, dank and smelling of Jameson! Everything was right with the world for a few short hours!!!!!

Halfdoor Records hosted a helluva weekend at Palmers Bar this weekend. It started on Friday with Palmers First Annual BBQ Baby-Back Rib Cook-off! We had six chefs competing for the title, which was won by Deep Blues Festival Founder Chris Johnson. Congrats Chris! The evening featured music from the Liquor Pigs, Bernie King and the one and only Juke Joint Duo/Two Man Wrecking Crew of Cedric Burnside and Lightnin’ Malcolm. What a night! The duo played a bunch of their oh so familiar tunes and treated us to performances of some great new material. Friday was truly a special night!

Then on Saturday the Fuck Knights continued their month long Saturday residency at Palmers. They played an unusually early set, so early that I think they might actually remember doing it. Then Charlie Parr blessed us with a spellbinding, two and a half-hour set. I don’t know how Charlie does what he does but I do know that he is truly a special talent.

I’ve heard the records, read the reviews and neither could prepare me for what went down on Saturday night. For anyone who hasn’t seen this duo perform live you really need to do so. If they aren’t coming to your town soon it’s definitely worth a road trip! Thanks to Fuck Knights and Half Door Records artist Boom Boom Belam for opening up the night. Both put on great sets and really got the crowd ready for finale.

Well, we finally woke up and just wanted to say thank you to all of the great folks we met who stopped by the booth, came down to Palmer’s to eat, drink or play a set, etc. We had one hell of a time and we hope that you did too!! Don’t be strangers now, if you’re in the area stop by Palmer’s again to say hello or let us know when you’ll be here by droppin’ an email. Hope to see you all again next year at the 2010 Deep Blues Festival!!!!

As our global financial markets continue their inevitable collapse and the world spirals into the final ironic conflict over dominant morality, some are still just idly chatting over cold beers at Palmers!? Conceivably, they are simply waiting for the rest of the United States to eventually begin the painstaking process of introspection for some path to recovery. One can only hope that, if not a collective realization in the nick of time, somehow averting the certain disaster predicted by the Mayan calendar, someone will at least find an unscratched Halfdoor release somewhere in the rubble and these artists will finally get their day in the sun…blistering sun.
